About UNEP

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is a key UN committee dedicated to addressing global environmental issues, focusing on topics such as climate change, pollution control, and resource management. It consists of member states that collaborate to develop and propose resolutions aimed at promoting environmental sustainability and responding to ecological challenges. UNEP emphasizes diplomacy and cooperation, working with governments, businesses, and civil society to tackle environmental issues and promote sustainability. Delegates in the UNEP committee work on crafting policies and strategies to address these pressing environmental concerns through discussion, negotiation, and consensus-building.

UNEP AGENDA HERE

On May 31, 2010, Australia filed a complaint against Japan, saying that Japan engaged in massive whaling under the guise of scientific study. The Japanese Whale Research Program was found to be in breach of Japan’s duties under the International Convention for the Regulation of Whaling and other international agreements relating to marine mammal conservation and the maritime environment. Japan’s whaling efforts in the Southern Ocean, according to the International Court of Justice, were not rationally tailored to fulfill their declared goals. The Court ruled that Japan’s special licenses did not fulfill the concept of “scientific research” as defined in the treaty. As a result, the Court ordered that current authorizations be revoked and that future licenses for the slaughter, capture, and treatment of whales under Japan’s JARPA II program be prohibited.
