United Nations Security Council

About UNSC

The United Nations Security Council is the most controversial committee of the UN, as its main role is to ensure that international peace is maintained, and it does so by exercising its unique authorizations granted by the UN Charter to sanction member states, to deploy UN forces or to settle multi-national disputes. The structure of the UNSC is also unique relative to other committees: the Council consists of only 15 member states that change periodically (excluding the P5 states, which possess the power to veto resolutions).

Agenda

The Prevention of Conflicts brought by Refugees and Demographic Change

Refugees are people who have been forced to leave their country to escape war, persecution, or natural disaster. The UNHCR committee is responsible for providing accommodation and basic necessities, as well as psychological aid and inclusion courses, though the UNSC has a responsibility to prevent conflicts due to refugee influxes, to ensure refugees are not a threat to national security, and to come up with resolutions to help set a balance in refugee-hosting countries. Rapid demographic change is also a problem that the UNSC should ensure that it does not become a threat to security. The Security Council, in resolutions, shall ensure that there are at least a few precautions already in check to prevent conflicts that arise from refugee influxes.

MEET THE CHAIRS

MALEK IBRAHIM

Malek, the chair for the Security Council Committee, has been on a political arc for almost half a decade now. With activism for secularism through translations of political articles to participating and contributing in Model United Nations committees, he had earned every right to chair the most controversial committee of all. Malek has an undying interest for history, economics, and philosophy, all of which contribute to the core definition of “politics”; He had participated in real-world opposition and contributed to resolutions of Middle Eastern conflicts through active involvement with journalists and writers. With these experiences, Malek will ensure that the Security Council will have the most productive debates on the topic.
